Current mining processes are incapable of completely removing all desired minerals from ore deposits. 

Most mines create artificial ponds and waste stacks to store leftover solid waste after minerals are extracted. These ponds and waste stacks contain billions of dollars of valuable minerals, but at levels too low to be removed with existing mining technology.
